Re: What's the best NON 1911 style 45 ACP handgun????

yep I agree on the P220 especially one of the slab side West German ones. But I would go with a highly altered 1917 Smith and Wesson revolver as my second pick. Thanks for the input. I should have run this as a "poll" rather than the discussion method I used, my ignorance of how to use the forum, sorry guys and gals.

I like the way you roll SkyDog, lol. However, I'll go with the Colt New Service of the same era! Big revolver means rock steady in my book. My grand dad carried one in WWI.
I am glad to see that S&W has reintroduced their M1917. I sure wish Colt would do the same.

I saw a 8 shot custom shop S&W M27 stainless/armoloy 2 inch bbl, that got my attention too. The colt version (at least the one's I've seen) from "the" era circa WWI were crude looking monsters. Any ideas on what i may have seen?

I'd guess that you saw either a Colt Army or a Colt New Service. Hard to tell the two apart I think. The New Service seems to have made a name for itself in the civilian market where it finally got dressed up a little nicer. The New Service was chambered in 45 Colt, 45 ACP, 455 Eley, 44 Russian, 44 Spl 38-40 and 357 Magnum. Probably a half dozen more that I don't know about...The Commercial model had much nicer grips and when the Target model and the Shooting Master came out, Colt finally decided to add a rear sight. I think the 1917 S&W was more refined but the Colt was my first love in handguns, simply because my grandfather carried it.

My grandfather returned from serving in the Army Air Corp in WWI with his Colt New Service. I assume he put some personal touches to it. As I remember it, he always kept it in a U.S. Army flap holster. It had the deep, deep blue finish that you could nearly swim in, and there were ivory grips on it. Sadly, the revolver was stolen just prior to his passing. I remember my dad saying the police blamed some neighborhood boys but if it was ever recovered it never found it's way back home.

Happy Shooting SkyDog, and thanks for posting this thread.

In semi-auto it's going to be the XD45. There is nothing else out there that is as

life saving reliable. Although my ACII is approaching 1K rounds without a bobble

    nor a wobble!

I have to agree with slickab.
My Springfield XD 45 Tactical shoots like a dream. Very reliable, smooth trigger, easy to maintain and very controllable .

The one I have right now and would vote for is the Tangfolio EAA Witness Compact Polymer, a CZ75 clone, in .45 acp. Have had it since 2000 and it has been uber reliable and accurate. I like that it has both cocked and locked or DA first shot capabilities. That and it is perhaps the softest shooting 45 I have ever shot.
